ART TALK

Art Talk presents Mary Jo Hughes,

"Charles Comfort in the 20th Century: Abstracting the Canadian Landscape"

Confederation Centre Art Gallery

7 pm, Tuesday, July 3

Art Talk continues at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery on July 3, at 7 p.m., with curator Mary Jo Hughes's tour through the exhibition Take Comfort on view until September 2.

Circulated by the Winnipeg Art Gallery and sponsored by Hyndman and Company Limited, Take Comfort - The Career of Charles Comfort is a major retrospective exhibition of Comfort's varied work, featuring pieces from private and public collections.

Take Comfort is the first critical assessment of a prolific career that spanned nearly seven decades. In her tour, Hughes will challenge the view of Comfort as "eclectic" and instead frame his use of divergent artistic styles as the logical progression of a personal pursuit of meaningful expression.

Hughes received her Master of Arts in Art History from Queen's University, Ont., in 1990. She has been curator of historical art at The Winnipeg Art Gallery since 1995, where she has curated many exhibitions. She also teaches Canadian Art History at the University of Winnipeg.

Hosted by artists and curators every Tuesday at 7 p.m., Art Talks are free informal discussions on art theory and history, artists and their work, and upcoming or current gallery shows. Everyone is welcome and no previous knowledge on the topic is required.

Register for the First Ever ATC Event at the CCAG

The Confederation Centre Art Gallery is excited to announce its first Artist Trading Card event on August 15 at 7 p.m.! Registration for this event closes on July 11.

Artist trading cards are original works of art produced in a miniature format. No larger than a baseball card (approximately 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches), artist trading cards can be made of almost any medium, including - but not limited to! - print, photography, paper mâché, wood and wool.

They can be produced in editions (limited numbers of the same card) or series (sets of cards with a unifying theme), or as singular originals. Artist trading cards must be self-produced and signed by the artist. Written on the back is the artists' name and contact information, the card title and, if applicable, the edition or series number.

Contemporary artist trading cards originated in Zurich in 1997. Artist M.Vänçi Stirnemann began the project in order to bring artists of varying mediums together and easily share samples of their work. It made its ways to the New Gallery, and artist run centre in Calgary, in 1997 with the artist Don Mabie (a.k.a. Chuck Stake.) Now, hundreds of artists all over the world meet to exchange cards and build creative networks that flout geographical and conceptual borders. Only two cardinal rules are observed when trading artist cards: trades must be one for one, and cards cannot be exchanged for money.

Artists of all disciplines are invited to prepare their own trading cards and join in on the swapping fun with a trading event on Wednesday, August 15. All interested participants must register with gallery curator/educator Siobhan Wiggans before July 11 by email, swiggans@confederationcentre.com, or by phone, (902) 628.6112. Participants will be contacted with further information.
