8. Public Meeting on Biofuels
The Council of Canadians (PEI) will hold a public meeting and panel
discussion on "The False Promise of Biofuels for PEI and elsewhere" on
Monday, February 4, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Murphy Community Center in
Charlottetown, Room 205.
Three well-known Islanders will tackle the issue of "The False Promise of
Biofuels for PEI" from various perspectives. The speakers are farmer Danny
Hendricken, District Director for PEI with National Farmers' Union;
environmentalist Sharon Labchuk, campaigner with Earth Action; and scientist
Dr. Kirk Brown, former research director at the Institute of Man and
Resources and first CEO of the PEI Energy Corporation, and for a number of
years a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Atlantic Wind
Test Site at North Cape.
Biofuels are at the centre of a new commitment by the P.E.I. government to
have 30 per cent of energy used on the Island come from renewable resources
by 2016. The PEI Government is being lobbied and may be set to subsidize a
$40 million ethanol plant to be supplied by sugar beet, a crop that has
never before been grown on PEI.
The Council of Canadians is encouraging the public to attend this important
first meeting on "The False Promise of BIOFUELS for PEI and
elsewhere." There will be plenty of opportunity during the meeting for
concerned citizens to have their say as the 'growing of food for cars' is
emerging as a major issue. For more information contact Leo Broderick
894-4874.

leaders to attend these meetings as a part of a FAFIA-led delegation.
Participation in the FAFIA-led delegation is intended to support community
advocates/leaders in advancing women's economic security in their
communities. To this end, in addition to participation in the FAFIA-led
delegation, participants will be required to engage in post-meeting follow
up through the development and implementation of a community action plan
regarding women's economic security.

11. FASD Workshop - February 27th
Date: Wednesday, February 27th Storm date: Wednesday, March 5th
Time: 9:30 - 3:00
Location: Charlottetown but actual location to be announced later
Cost: Free
For more information please contact the Main Street Family Resource Centre
at 687-3928.
Traditionally the response to FASD has been to focus on alcohol use and the
impact on children. Women who struggle with substance use are often self
medicating to deal with traumas and difficulties in their lives. There
use of substances does not mean they do not care about their babies.
The workshop will take a look at how gender expections have a profound
impact on women`s lives. We want to develop a deeper understanding of how
women`s realities; such as societal expections and children, impact on why
women are drinking and how we can help them to stop. This means looking at
FASD from the perspective of how it impacts women - from a gender
persepective.

2/Masterclass Enters Phase Two
In early February, The Island Media Arts Co-op's (IMAC) Masterclass will enter its second phase under the guidance of Island-based filmmaker Brian Ramsay. Mr. Ramsay will instruct this Masterclass session on the topics of Direction and Production Planning. The five Masterclass students are all local emerging filmmakers whose short films and videos are in the process of development through this initiative. Mr. Ramsay will help guide the students toward the completion of their projects at a professionally developed level. The Masterclass students are: Louise Lalonde, Dennis Trainor, Jeremy Larter, Patrick Ledwell and Trisha Clarkin.
Brian Ramsay has enjoyed a very rewarding 30 years in the entertainment industry. He started his career in the touring live concert business as an audio technician with T.F.A. Electrosound, servicing clients such as Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, George Benson, Parliament Funkadelic, Ted Nugent, Stevie Wonder and many more. Making a lateral move, Ramsay entered the film industry in the 1980's. He has worked as a production manager, 1st assistant director, line producer, sound recordist and director. His work with the Partners Film Co., Disney Touchstone, Roger Corman, The Alan Ladd Company and many others have brought him to the upper echelons of the Canadian film industry. His resume includes 17 series/feature films and in excess of a thousand national and international commercials. Brian was fortunate enough to premier his movie Cuban Fire at the Cannes Film Festival. He has been the recipient of national and international awards as a producer and director.
The IMAC Masterclass Series is currently in it's first year. This initiative takes five emerging filmmakers 'under wing' and puts them through the rigorous process of creating short films and videos from the ground up. The Masterclass commenced in November of 2007 with the first session on Film Theory, Script Development and the Language of Film taught by Dalhousie film professor and filmmaker Anthony Cristiano. Since that time the students have been working with local mentors Rick Gibbs, Mark Sandiford, and Dave Ward in developing their projects on the theoretical, creative, technical, and entrepreneurial aspects of filmmaking. The five projects range in genre from documentary to animation to dramatic short, and will be shot over the Winter and Spring of 2008.
Crew and talent for these films and videos are drawn from the Masterclass students themselves, the IMAC membership, and the local community. The aim is to strengthen the bonds and experience of the local filmmaking community from a grass-roots level, initiating projects that will cement ties between filmmakers of all skill levels and creative vision. Each Masterclass participant has been given a budget to produce their work, and are encouraged and guided to seek additional funding from outside sources. The final stage of the Masterclass will occur in May of 2008 when internationally acclaimed experimental filmmaker and professor of film production at Concordia University, Richard Hancox, will instruct the final session on the topics of Post Production and Editing. At the conclusion of this program the films and videos will be distributed to film festivals and broadcasters in the hopes of gaining a wider audience and setting the bar for Island-based independent filmmaking. For more info. go to www.islandmedia.pe.ca.

PEI Catwalk Description (fashion design aspect):
Two locally owned businesses have teamed up this winter to give Islanders a chance to show off their fashion design skills. The Green Man -vintage and vinyl-, and Absolutely Fabulous are hosting PEI Catwalk 2008. Billed as 'PEI's first Fashion Design Competition', The contest begins January 21st when competitors are issued their first challenge.
A series of design challenges, six in all, will be delivered to competitors who will then have seven days to complete and return them to one of the two stores. The catch; not all challenges will involve traditional materials. Like the television show Project Runway Canada (on which the contest is loosely based), fabrics and inspirations will vary widely. The inaugural season (of Project Runway) saw designers working with everything from cast off umbrellas to fine fabrics. Though some might find this intimidating Kelly Caseley(Co-Owner of The Green Man) says "Using nontraditional materials actually levels the playing field. Those with experience sewing may have difficulty adapting, whereas competitors with little or no experience can approach these challenges with a fresh perspective.". The ultimate goal is to give Islanders a chance to test their design skills and explore the possibilities within Fashion Design. The designers creations will be on display in the participating stores where the public is asked to stop by have a look and cast a vote for their favorite. The Green Man is located at 48 University Ave, and Absolutely Fabulous can be found just up the street at 218 University Ave.
The grand prize which includes a portfolio photo shoot by professional photographer Shayli Vere, and a profile in The Buzz (PEI's local Arts and Entertainment Newspaper), will be awarded at a Fashion Show in late March. The show will feature pieces from the competition, from both stores, as well as short videos from Island Media Arts Co-op(IMAC), who are issuing a related video making challenge to it's members. Net proceeds from the Fashion Show are being donated to Anderson House. For more information call 566-1361 (The Green Man), or 367-3398 (Ab Fab) or 892-3131(IMAC).
4/Lonely Screenwriters - Hallooo Out There!
(Hosted by IMAC member Dave Bennett)
Anyone interested in joining a Screenwriters' Circle?
If so, let's get together this Thursday (January 23rd)at the IMAC Resource Room to discuss the possibility
of meeting on a regular basis.
In preparation for the first meeting please spend somethought on the following:
- What would you like to get out of a writers' group?
- How often would you like to meet?
- Would you participate in writing exercises unrelated to your own work?
- Would you like an opportunity to critique and to be critiqued?
- Would you like to post-mortem previous works?
- Would you like to discover writing partnerships?
That should be enough to guide us through our first session.
If you have a script that you feel would benefit from peer group feedback please bring it along. Hard copy is best since not all word-processing formats are supported on our computers.
See you January 23rd, 7:00pm
There will, of course, be snacks.
No fees. No registration. Just show up. For more
information e-mail me (David Bennett)

Can't make the meeting but interested in joining later? No problem. E-mail above.
5/February Centred Screening - Back to the Future
The Island Media Arts Co-op's (IMAC) Centred Screening series is now over the half-way mark for its 2007/08 season. February's screening on Monday February 4th at 7pm at The Guild will be the 5th screening of the series. The series takes place on the first Monday of each month from October to May. February's theme is 'Back to the Future' and will showcase independent media artworks from film and video co-operatives from across Canada - from as far away as BC to as close to home as... well... PEI.
The Back to the Future theme puts its spotlight on films and videos that deal with futuristic concepts; robots, mad scientists, and space and time travel. Many of these films are shot with a retro feel... the way the future appeared from the 1950s.
The featured artist and guest speaker is local filmmaker John Hopkins who will be presenting a selection of his work. His 16mm. film Portfolio plays with concepts of the future, present, and past, and has won numerous awards at festivals such as The Atlantic Film Festival and the Can-Pro Gold Grand Prize. John will also be speaking about his current project 'Robogod' which is a feature length documentary that explores the fascinating mind and work of the internationally revered 'robotocist' Mark Tilden.
The Artist Challenger for February is local filmmaker Adam Perry who will be on hand to speak to and present his short video created especially for this screening. Also featured in February are the second round of Super-8 challenger films by Andrew MacIsaac (Andy John), Graham Putnam, and Bob Stanley.

1/Filmbay Launches the First Online Film Marketplace & Self Distribution System
Filmbay, Ltd. (Toronto, Canada), announces the launch of the first Internet marketplace for worldwide buyers and sellers to search and option feature motion pictures, short films, documentaries, music videos, music, screenplays and more. In addition, filmmakers, sound composers and others can sell their titles individually as DVD, CD or other formats via an online shop.
Never before has the global film industry had a centralized online marketplace, communications centre, distribution outlet and community in one website. As a result, the independent film industry was once scattered all over the world. Writers, Actors, Directors, Music Composers had been
separated not only geographically by country, but even more so by being represented by a guild, union, or agent which often imposed limits on their ability to engage in independent film production worldwide. Filmbay erases these limits. The idea of creating such an Internet venue originated with Filmbay's founder and President, John Paul Trutnau, and his personal assessment of the current global film marketing process.

LONELY SCREENWRITERS Of The World
LONELY SCREENWRITERS - HELLO OUT THERE !!!
Anyone interested in joining a Screenwriters' Circle?
If so, let's get together Thursday January 24th at the IMAC Resource Room to discuss the possibility of meeting on a regular basis.
In preparation for the first meeting please spend some thought on the following:
- What would you like to get out of a writers'group?
- How often would you like to meet?
- Would you participate in writing exercises unrelated to your own work?
- Would you like an opportunity to critique and to be critiqued?
- Would you like to post-mortem previous works?
- Would you like to discover writing partnerships?
That should be enough to guide us through our first season.
If you have a script that you feel would benefit from peer group feedback please bring it along. Hard copy is best since not all word-processing formats are supported on our computers.
Partly as an entertainment and partly to get our juices going I'd like to suggest a few writing exercises based on an item I recently pulled from an old idea file.
It's a Dear Abby column from 2005.(Perhaps it's my fascination with the tawdry, perhaps it's the skeletal telling of the story, whatever the reason I am drawn back to this little drama over and over again. It suggests low comedy and high comedy, spoof and study, melodrama, treatise, tragedy and farce.)
Think about additional characters and scenes.
The Guardian, Saturday, November 12, 2005 p C6
GIFTS OF MONEY BLOW AWAY IN WHIRLWIND OF MARRIAGE
DEAR ABBY:
My 22-year-old niece, "Brittany", married her boyfriend of many years last month in a lavish production of a wedding financed entirely by her father (my brother). On the invitations it was mentioned that their home was fully furnished, so in lieu of gifts, they'd appreciate money for their honeymoon to the Dominican Republic.
Most family members generously complied and chipped in $300 to $500 each. My widowed grandmother, who lives on a fixed income, even sent them $50.
Four days after their return from the honeymoon, Brittany threw her husband of two weeks out of the house and moved in with her new boyfriend, who she'd first met when he "entertained" at her bachelorette party three weeks prior. To say we are all surprised is putting it mildly.
No one has heard from Brittany since, and no explanation has been offered. My mother recently got her on the phone, and Brittany quickly ended the conversation by claiming all the money had been "spent" and that her now ex-husband had any funds that remained.
(We know this can't be true because the distraught groom recently approached my brother and asked him to pay for the annulment.)
Doesn't etiquette dictate that Brittany return all gifts - including cash - as the marriage ended just days after the cheque cleared the bank? Is this why there's a 12-month window in which to send wedding gifts?
- ANGRY IN SAN FRANCISCO
I'll bring the original with Abby's response to the meeting.
Have a whack at it.
See you January 24th, 7:00pm
There will, of course, be snacks.
No fees. No registration. Just show up. For more information e-mail me (David Bennett)
storyinthemaking@yahoo.ca
Can't make the meeting but interested in joining later? No problem. E-mail above.
