Shoot Yourself - The Bolex Film Camera - with Dave Ward - Level One

Though it may be the digital age, there is no substitute for working with real film. Learn the original craft of filmmaking; how to read a light meter, load 16mm. film, and all the other functions of a Bolex film camera. You will also be shooting a short experimental film!

Because it is the digital age, you might as well know all there is to know about the digital video camera; learn all the functions and proper use of the PD170 video camera. You will also be shooting a short scripted video.

What is filmmaking but capturing light? Good lighting can truly capture the mood or essence of a scene. Don't get left behind in the dark! Learn a wide variety of lighting techniques and set ups.

Sound Saavy - Sound Recording Techniques - with Dave Ward - Level One and Two

Some say that what we hear makes up for half of what we see, meaning bad sound can make a video or film look awful! Learn how to record proper sound in a variety of settings using a variety of mics and recording set-ups.

2/Masterclass Enters Phase Two


In early February, The Island Media Arts Co-op's (IMAC) Masterclass will enter its second phase under the guidance of Island-based filmmaker Brian Ramsay. Mr. Ramsay will instruct this Masterclass session on the topics of Direction and Production Planning. The five Masterclass students are all local emerging filmmakers whose short films and videos are in the process of development through this initiative. Mr. Ramsay will help guide the students toward the completion of their projects at a professionally developed level. The Masterclass students are: Louise Lalonde, Dennis Trainor, Jeremy Larter, Patrick Ledwell and Trisha Clarkin.


Brian Ramsay has enjoyed a very rewarding 30 years in the entertainment industry. He started his career in the touring live concert business as an audio technician with T.F.A. Electrosound, servicing clients such as Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, George Benson, Parliament Funkadelic, Ted Nugent, Stevie Wonder and many more. Making a lateral move, Ramsay entered the film industry in the 1980's. He has worked as a production manager, 1st assistant director, line producer, sound recordist and director. His work with the Partners Film Co., Disney Touchstone, Roger Corman, The Alan Ladd Company and many others have brought him to the upper echelons of the Canadian film industry. His resume includes 17 series/feature films and in excess of a thousand national and international commercials. Brian was fortunate enough to premier his movie Cuban Fire at the Cannes Film Festival. He has been the recipient of national and international awards as a producer and director.

The IMAC Masterclass Series is currently in it's first year. This initiative takes five emerging filmmakers 'under wing' and puts them through the rigorous process of creating short films and videos from the ground up. The Masterclass commenced in November of 2007 with the first session on Film Theory, Script Development and the Language of Film taught by Dalhousie film professor and filmmaker Anthony Cristiano. Since that time the students have been working with local mentors Rick Gibbs, Mark Sandiford, and Dave Ward in developing their projects on the theoretical, creative, technical, and entrepreneurial aspects of filmmaking. The five projects range in genre from documentary to animation to dramatic short, and will be shot over the Winter and Spring of 2008.

Crew and talent for these films and videos are drawn from the Masterclass students themselves, the IMAC membership, and the local community. The aim is to strengthen the bonds and experience of the local filmmaking community from a grass-roots level, initiating projects that will cement ties between filmmakers of all skill levels and creative vision. Each Masterclass participant has been given a budget to produce their work, and are encouraged and guided to seek additional funding from outside sources. The final stage of the Masterclass will occur in May of 2008 when internationally acclaimed experimental filmmaker and professor of film production at Concordia University, Richard Hancox, will instruct the final session on the topics of Post Production and Editing. At the conclusion of this program the films and videos will be distributed to film festivals and broadcasters in the hopes of gaining a wider audience and setting the bar for Island-based independent filmmaking. 3/PEI Catwalk and IMAC

Have you heard of the exciting new initiative in Charlottetown - PEI Catwalk?! It is a fashion-designing challenge put forth to designers of all ilks. The 8 week challenge will culminate in a full on, full out, fashion show runway event! (PEI Catwalk Challenge described in detail below).

Well... IMAC is partnering on this initiative, so that while Charlottetown fashion designers are inventing gorgeous new fashions for the runway event, Charlottetown media artists are assembling brave new videos to be projected at this event!

a.. Notify the IMAC office that you (or a group or partnership) want to produce a video for PEI Catwalk - The Body As Canvas - You can call, drop by or email your involvement. 892-3131 or imac@pei.aibn.com
b.. There must be at lease one IMAC Producer Member per group.
c.. Sign up by Monday February 4th 2008.
d.. This gives you one and one half months to create a short video piece - inspired by the theme 'The Body as Canvas'. Videos must be 5 mins. or under.
e.. You then receive one free miniDV tape and all the video equipment rentals and resources you need FOR FREE from IMAC for the duration of the project. (Make sure you book equipment well enough in advance).
f.. Deadline for completed videos is March 14th, 2008.
g.. Anything goes! (As long as the theme 'The Body as Canvas' is applied). If you want to do a short documentary covering the works in progress by the Fashion Designers, you can do that. If you want to create an abstract piece to be projected while the models walk the catwalk -you can do that too! If you want to create a short narrative film to be screened between runway sets, that is also allowed.

i.. Your completed work will be reviewed by a curatorial pannel and screened at the PEI Catwalk runway show in late March with all the pretty people in attendance!

PEI Catwalk Description (fashion design aspect):
Two locally owned businesses have teamed up this winter to give Islanders a chance to show off their fashion design skills. The Green Man -vintage and vinyl-, and Absolutely Fabulous are hosting PEI Catwalk 2008. Billed as 'PEI's first Fashion Design Competition', The contest begins January 21st when competitors are issued their first challenge.

A series of design challenges, six in all, will be delivered to competitors who will then have seven days to complete and return them to one of the two stores. The catch; not all challenges will involve traditional materials. Like the television show Project Runway Canada (on which the contest is loosely based), fabrics and inspirations will vary widely. The inaugural season (of Project Runway) saw designers working with everything from cast off umbrellas to fine fabrics. Though some might find this intimidating Kelly Caseley(Co-Owner of The Green Man) says "Using nontraditional materials actually levels the playing field. Those with experience sewing may have difficulty adapting, whereas competitors with little or no experience can approach these challenges with a fresh perspective.". The ultimate goal is to give Islanders a chance to test their design skills and explore the possibilities within Fashion Design. The designers creations will be on display in the participating stores where the public is asked to stop by have a look and cast a vote for their favorite. The Green Man is located at 48 University Ave, and Absolutely Fabulous can be found just up the street at 218 University Ave.

The grand prize which includes a portfolio photo shoot by professional photographer Shayli Vere, and a profile in The Buzz (PEI's local Arts and Entertainment Newspaper), will be awarded at a Fashion Show in late March. The show will feature pieces from the competition, from both stores, as well as short videos from Island Media Arts Co-op(IMAC), who are issuing a related video making challenge to it's members. 4/Lonely Screenwriters - Hallooo Out There!

Anyone interested in joining a Screenwriters' Circle?

If so, let's get together this Thursday (January 23rd)at the IMAC Resource Room to discuss the possibility
of meeting on a regular basis.

In preparation for the first meeting please spend somethought on the following:

- What would you like to get out of a writers' group?
- How often would you like to meet?
- Would you participate in writing exercises unrelated to your own work?
- Would you like an opportunity to critique and to be critiqued?
- Would you like to post-mortem previous works?
- Would you like to discover writing partnerships?

That should be enough to guide us through our first session.
If you have a script that you feel would benefit from peer group feedback please bring it along. Hard copy is best since not all word-processing formats are supported on our computers.

5/February Centred Screening - Back to the Future

The Island Media Arts Co-op's (IMAC) Centred Screening series is now over the half-way mark for its 2007/08 season. February's screening on Monday February 4th at 7pm at The Guild will be the 5th screening of the series. The series takes place on the first Monday of each month from October to May. February's theme is 'Back to the Future' and will showcase independent media artworks from film and video co-operatives from across Canada - from as far away as BC to as close to home as... well... PEI.

The Back to the Future theme puts its spotlight on films and videos that deal with futuristic concepts; robots, mad scientists, and space and time travel. Many of these films are shot with a retro feel... the way the future appeared from the 1950s.

The featured artist and guest speaker is local filmmaker John Hopkins who will be presenting a selection of his work. His 16mm. film Portfolio plays with concepts of the future, present, and past, and has won numerous awards at festivals such as The Atlantic Film Festival and the Can-Pro Gold Grand Prize. John will also be speaking about his current project 'Robogod' which is a feature length documentary that explores the fascinating mind and work of the internationally revered 'robotocist' Mark Tilden.

The Artist Challenger for February is local filmmaker Adam Perry who will be on hand to speak to and present his short video created especially for this screening. Also featured in February are the second round of Super-8 challenger films by Andrew MacIsaac (Andy John), Graham Putnam, and Bob Stanley.
