Cute as a... button event offers small art, big trading
Charlottetown - Get set for some big trading with small art at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery's first ever button event February 29. Enjoy music, refreshments, playful art and the chance to pick your favourites out of fifty button designs.
'Cute as a...' announced an open competition earlier this year for artists to submit designs for 1 ¼ inch buttons. Fifty designs have been selected and reproduced and are ready for trading.
"I got the idea from some galleries in Toronto and Vancouver," says Siobhan Wiggans, Education and Outreach Officer at the Centre. "I initiated this program because I thought it would be a great fit between the Centre and the community."
All ages are invited to the evening event at the Art Gallery. At 'cute as a...' ticket holders will each draw five buttons from a bowl for trading.
Wiggans received 62 design submissions. Local community members Kim Devine, Karen Mair and Greg Doran judged them based on design and content. All designs were anonymous when the judges examined them. The youngest artist was two and half years old.
All of the selected designs will be on display in a mini exhibition at the event. There will be a preview of the selected designs from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 29 in the Upper East Gallery.
"During the winter months the Island can be quiet, but hopefully this will get people out to join in on the fun," Wiggans says. "'Cute as a...' will be a great way to meet new people because the trading will be sure to spark conversation."
Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door or the Box Office. Each ticket holder will receive five buttons the night of the event for trading. There will be refreshments provided and music playing throughout the evening. Start time is 7:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

PEI Screenwriter's Bootcamp
Are you the next Great Canadian Screenwriter?
2nd PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp builds on 1st-year participants' deals.
After the rousing success of last year's inaugural PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp, the Island Media Arts Co-op is gearing up for an exciting 2008 event that will shake the rafters.
PEI is the right place and now is the right time for developing screenwriters,Ósaid Louise Lalonde, Project Manager of Island Media Arts Co-op, the group that conceived of and launched the innovative writer training camp. It's early yet, but already two Bootcamp graduates have development options or deals - those are real results for both the writers and the Bootcamp.
This year, screenwriting mentors Alex Epstein (Montreal screenwriter and author of Crafty Screenwriting) and Tom Shoebridge (founding member of Ottawa's Canadian Screen Training Centre) will once again be working with 12 up-and-coming screenwriters whose stories will have been selected to develop and pitch to broadcasters and producers.
Of the 12 projects developed during last year's Bootcamp, so far PEI's own Peter Murphy received an option from Montreal producers for his feature screenplay, This Old Haunt, and Nova Scotia writer Mary Pedersen has now signed a TV series development deal with CBC for her project, Ice Queens.
The 2nd Annual PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp is presented in collaboration with Telefilm Canada and the Island Media Arts Co-op.
The Bootcamp is restricted to emerging or mid-career writers who are also residents of one of the four Atlantic provinces. Selection is based on the merit of their ideas and the quality of their writing.
This retreat-style workshop is being held from June 2-6, 2008 in Mount Stewart, PEI
For applications and more information go to www.islandmedia.pe.ca or contact Louise Lalonde at 902.566.1353. Deadline for application is March 21st 2008!
Broadcasters CBC, CTV, and the SuperChannel will join regional producers on the last day of Bootcamp to hear participants make their pitches. This retreat-style professional development week is an opportunity for emerging and mid-career creators to learn how to work with the abig boys.
The Island Media Arts Coop has existed for thirty years and has been a trainer and innovator in the development of film and video production. IMAC, a not-for-profit organization, welcomes artists of different backgrounds to stimulate and promote film and video production in the community.
This initiative is in partnership with Telefilm Canada. Other supporters are TechPEI and The Superchannel.

7/Masterclass March Shoots
The Island Media Arts Co-op's Masterclass is well under way. There are five PEI filmmakers participanting in the Masterclass. Jeremy Larter, Louise Lalonde, Trisha Clarkin, Patrick Ledwell, and Dennis Trainor are all working on their own individual film and video projects. The genres of these works span documentary, animation, and short dramatic films. The idea behind the Masterclass is to get serious independent Island filmmakers into a stream-lined training program that provides them with insight, structure, and support. It seems to be working! The Masterclass began in November of 2007 and since then the Island filmmakers have been mentored by film experts from on and off Island, and by one another!
Two of the projects are short dramas to be shot on film. Jeremy Larter's dramatic comedy, Bitter Regret Man, is scheduled to be shot over the first weekend of March. Mr. Larter is bringing in a professional Cinematographer from Toronto, Ali Reggab, to work the camera. Other key crew will be selected from within PEI's local industry and media arts community. With a professional cinematographer on set, the hope is that all involved will be able to learn from the intense process of an independent film shoot - where every frame counts. This film will be shot on 35mm. Louise Lalonde's film short with the working title of Looking for Mister Right to be shot on 16mm., is scheduled for shooting over the last weekend of March. Ms. Lalonde is bringing in Cinematographer Becky Parsons from Halifax to the shoot. Again, by brining in outside expertise, the local portion of the crew will be able to learn by her example. Ms. Lalonde intends her crew to be comprised of as many women in the key roles as possible, thus creating opportunities for female filmmakers.
All of the five projects will be completed in the early Summer of 2008. They will be screened at a premiere screening hosted by IMAC, and then on to festivals and broadcasters across the country. If the Masterclass becomes an annual initiative, PEI stands to see the creation of many more beautiful works of cinematic art, and the development of an inspired community of locally based filmmakers with a few credits under their belts.

1/Canada Council Releases Action Plan for 2008-11
The Canada Council for the Arts today released its Action Plan for the next three years, including plans for the distribution of $31.5 million in new funding in 2008-09.
In July 2007, the federal government announced an ongoing $30 million increase to the Council's parliamentary appropriation, bringing the government's annual investment in the Council to over $180 million. The announcement followed one-time increases to the Council's funding of $20 million in 2006-2007 and $30 million in 2007-2008. The Council has also increased its funding for arts project grants by $1.5 million on a permanent basis, which brings the total amount of new ongoing funding to $31.5 million.
The Canada Council's Action Plan cites specific strategies and activities aligned with the five broad directions in its Strategic Plan, which was released in October. The Strategic Plan committed the Canada Council to five specific directions:
a.. Reinforcing the Council's commitment to individual artists, working alone or collaboratively, as the core of artistic practice in Canada;
b.. Broadening the Council's commitment to arts organizations to strengthen their capacity to underpin artistic practices in all parts of the country;
c.. Enhancing the Council's leadership role in promoting equity as a critical priority in fulfilling Canada's artistic aspirations.
d.. Making partnerships with other organizations a key element in the Council's approach to advancing its mandate; and
e.. Enhancing the Canada Council's capacity to support the arts and implement change by strengthening its structure, staffing and services.
Both the Strategic Plan and the Action Plan were informed by more than six months of consultations with over 1,700 artists, arts organizations, other funders and members of the general public across Canada. The Action Plan itself was developed through an extensive participatory process, whereby workgroups made up of Canada Council staff developed priorities and strategies for each of the five strategic directions.
"The allocation of our new resources is driven by the priorities that were established in the Strategic Plan, which in turn was informed by the largest consultation in the Canada Council's history," said Canada Council Director Robert Sirman. "We are investing these funds as strategically as possible in pursuit of our ultimate goal: that Canada have a rich and vigorous creative life that stimulates the imagination and gives Canadians the means to share their spirit and vision with one another and the world."
Under the Action Plan, the Canada Council will, in 2008-09:
a.. Invest an additional $4.9 million in grants and services to individual artists, including a $700,000 increase in payments to authors through the Public Lending Right Commission.
b.. Invest an additional $20.1 million in operating grants, project grants and services to arts organizations, including theatre, dance, and opera companies, orchestras and music ensembles, art museums, galleries and artist-run centres, media arts production and dissemination organizations, book and arts magazine publishers, national arts service organizations and integrated arts (multidisciplinary) organizations.
c.. Invest an additional $1.9 million in grants and services aimed at promoting equity, including specific initiatives earmarked to benefit Aboriginal, culturally diverse and official language minority artists and arts organizations (in addition to funding for these artists and organizations through the Council's other programs).
d.. Invest an additional $831,077 in partnership initiatives involving arts funders at other levels of government or other types of organizations within and outside the arts; and
e.. Invest more than $3.6 million in the Council's internal capacity to support the arts, including increased staffing, research, program evaluation and communications.
Other highlights of the Action Plan include:
a.. Increased support for the promotion of Canada Council prizes, in an effort to enhance public awareness of the work and achievements of outstanding Canadian artists.
b.. An increase of more than $1.4 million for international touring and dissemination by Canadian arts organizations.
c.. Improved access by artists, including young artists, to professional development and networking through a portal on the Canada Council's web site.
d.. Research initiatives, in partnership with national arts service organizations, provincial and territorial arts funders and cultural policy experts, to better "map" Canada's arts infrastructure in order to develop a deeper understanding of the evolving national arts ecology and to identify regional needs and opportunities.

NF08: Mosaics will examine the wide array of works that are found within Media Arts. Works for the festival should examine relations of cross-cultural media - through video, sound, electronic music, internet, print, and writing. A mosaic has traditionally referred to art which takes pieces of a part to create a whole. The word has been used in multiple references across literature, media, science, software, video, and religion to describe different constellations of this phenomena. In recent years many political scientists and economists have discussed the equalizing effects of the internet on global culture. In addition to film, music and visuals and installation art series, NF08 will be creating shared media pieces connected via the internet and wireless performance. These pieces will have the ability to become part of a larger discourse on all platforms including audio, video, textual, design, locative, and performance. NF will be looking for applications that incorporate artists' personal work associated with the festivals current programming as well as proposals incorporating this greater participatory project. Programming includes installation, electronic music (techno, dub, live performance, a/v), presentations and film. NF is always looking to expand its partnerships in the local community as well, and is open to new opportunities with ARC's, Galleries and Collectives.

I MET THE WALRUS
Bravo!FACT-funded short film, I MET THE WALRUS, nominated for an OSCAR!
CTV Television's Bravo!FACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) team is thrilled that the animated short I Met the Walrus, directed by Josh Raskin and produced by Jerry Levitan, received a 2008 Academy Award nomination today for Best Animated Short Film.
In 1969, fourteen-year-old Jerry Levitan convinced John Lennon to do an interview with him in his Toronto hotel room. Excerpts from that interview containing John Lennon's thoughts on war, peace, and the state of the world are the soundtrack to Josh Raskin's breath-taking animated short I Met the Walrus.
Currently screening at the Sundance Film Festival, I Met the Walrus is one of 120 shorts that were awarded Bravo!FACT grants this past year. The film has already received many awards, including Best Animated Short at the 2007 American Film Institute (AFI) Fest in Los Angeles and Best Animation at the 2007 Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi. I Met the Walrus was recognized as one of Canada's Top Ten short films of 2007 by the Toronto International Film Festival Group.
The directorial debut of 27 year old Josh Raskin, the film features the pen sketches of James Braithwaite and the digital illustrations of Alex Kurina. I Met the Walrus airs on Bravo! later this year as part of Bravo!FACT Presents.
The Oscar nomination for I Met the Walrus is in the esteemed company of the other wonderful Canadian talent nominated this year.
Congratulatory notes to the I Met the Walrus team (Josh, Jerry, James and Alex) can be posted at the Bravo!FACT facebook group.

National Steel Blues Tour Now Booking

National Steel Blues Tour Now Booking
Hard as nails, tough as steel, but with a warm silver glow stretching from coast to coast. Join Doc MacLean and Michael Pickett, two of Canada’s most uncompromising, most travelled and most storied acoustic blues artists as they bring the real deal to your town. Feel the heat from two vintage National Steel guitars, up close and personal. Experience true blues on the edge and share the inspirations of these veteran artists, together only for this unique tour. The Ammo's in the Icebox, and there's a raw steak on a plate, cut like a valentine. So be ready.
The National Steel Blues Tour, September 3 - November 14, 2008, is to include up to 75 shows across Canada. A small number of American dates are also under consideration. Although many of the prime nights will be sold for theatre and concert presentations, the Tour looks forward to performing in a variety of venues both humble and grand. Contact the Tour, and we’ll do our best to bring the Blues to your place. Every night must be sold! Tour schedule, corporate sponsors, and routing TBA.
"This tour is going to feature some very, very deep blues. I'm totally thrilled imagining what Michael and I will do over this many shows. The National Steel Blues Tour is going to be an amazing journey." — Doc MacLean
********************************************************
Michael Pickett's past achievements as a bandleader, singer and harmonica player are legendary. With his bands Whiskey Howl, Wooden Teeth, and the Michael Pickett Band he received numerous awards and nominations and inspired a new generation of harmonica players. Forged in the rough little clubs of Toronto's Spadina Ave., Pickett's bands leaped beyond these humble beginnings to perform on national television and at important concerts such as John Lennon's famous "Live Peace" at Varsity Stadium. Emerging more recently as a solo, acoustic blues performer, Michael Pickett has achieved international acclaim with his intense, riveting performances and compositions. Armed with a road worn National and rack mounted harps, he frequently tours the United States, Canada, the UK and Europe — often in larger halls with artists like Buddy Guy, Lee Oskar, James Cotton, and Hubert Sumlin. "Pickett continues to amaze everyone," — Blues Revue, "He's got it!" — Sing Out! "A truly gifted artist," — Real Blues. Goes for the throat, standing ovations everywhere.
Doc MacLean is a bit of a vagabond Delta songster, as likely to be playing the streets of Memphis or Atlanta as opening a show for BB King. In 1972 he formed a duo with Colin Linden and became a popular opener for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters. Mentored by Son House, Doc toured with Peg Leg Sam the Medicine Show Man, Blind John Davis, Sam Chatmon, and many others. Bare fingers, dead strings and broken glass on an old National. His emotional remapping of Delta rooted music has won him a fan club that includes a who's who of the blues world. "Like an audio version of the movie Sin City," — Blues Revue, May 2007. Sell out shows across Canada.

In memory of Hilda Woolnough
Last night's opening was very well attended. Artists, art lovers, friends and family all came together for the opening of this special exhibition in memory of Hilda.

There is a book in the gallery where people have been writing memories of Hilda Woolnough. If you wish to add your memories to the book, you can either post them on the Confederation Centre Art Gallery facebook page or send them to me and I will add them to the book. I hope you can come and see this show and our other shows.
Monique Lafontaine
Confederation Centre Of The Arts, Art Gallery

as published in The BUZZ, Jan 2008
Hilda Woolnough, a visual artist and strong supporter of the arts, died Tuesday, December 11.
For over 30 years on Prince Edward Island, Hilda Woolnough was an artist, teacher, advocate and champion of artists’ rights. She was the driving force behind The Phoenix Gallery, The Gallery-On-Demand, the Great George Street Gallery, The Arts Guild, the Printmakers Council and the Student Art Expo. She served on the boards of many professional provincial and federal arts organizations, and was a lifetime member of the PEI Council of the Arts. In recognition of her contributions to the arts in Prince Edward Island, the Council awarded her the Father Adrien Arsenault Senior Arts Award in 1999. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in the same year.
Woolnough was born in Northampton, England in 1934; her mother, uncle, and brother were all artists. Woolnough attended the Chelsea School of Art in London, studying with Henry Moore, and graduated with an MFA. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 and soon after made her way to PEI. With her husband, UPEI professor, writer and publisher, Reshard Gool (1931-1989), they formed part of the nucleus for a vibrant arts community.
Woolnough had solo exhibitions across Canada, in Mexico and Jamaica, and was included in group exhibitions in Japan and Spain. Solo exhibitions of her work were mounted at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in 1976 (which toured the Atlantic region), 1991, 2001, and 2005. Her work is in numerous public, and private collections, including the Musée des beaux arts, Montreal, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the New Brunswick Museum, Memorial University, St. John’s, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
The Confederation Centre Art Gallery will present a selection of Woolnough works from the gallery collection, in January and February 2008, and continue to develop a retrospective planned for Summer 2009.
To honour Hilda’s contribution to the arts on Prince Edward Island and her dedication to arts and youth the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts has established the “Hilda Woolnough Memorial Scholarship” for Island students pursuing post-secondary education in visual arts, and who are in their first or second year of study.
The February issue of The Buzz will feature a special tribute to Hilda Woolnough.
Blog editors note: Hilda served as design instructor at Holland College School of Visual Arts in the crafts section of the school in the 1980's. Besides her career as an artist and arts advocate, she shared her great passion with her students, for the integration of strong design principles in handcraft design.
As For My Self
Hilda was my prof at UPEI back in 1973 and allowed me to continue as her student until her death. We took great pleasure in jousting over everything from A to Z with the direction the arts community should take as our favorite subject.
I am one person helped and influenced by Hilda Woolnough, she taught me much.

4/Masterclass Enters Second Phase
In early February, The Island Media Arts Co-op's (IMAC) Masterclass will enter its second phase under the guidance of Island-based filmmaker Brian Ramsay. Mr. Ramsay will instruct this Masterclass session on the topics of Direction and Production Planning. The five Masterclass students are all local emerging filmmakers whose short films and videos are in the process of development through this initiative. Mr. Ramsay will help guide the students toward the completion of their projects at a professionally developed level. The students involved are Trisha Clarkin, Patrick Ledwell, Dennis Trainor, Jeremy Larter, and Louise Lalonde.
The IMAC Masterclass Series is currently in it's first year. This initiative takes five emerging filmmakers 'under wing' and puts them through the rigorous process of creating short films and videos from the ground up. The Masterclass commenced in November of 2007 with the first session on Film Theory, Script Development and the Language of Film taught by Dalhousie film professor and filmmaker Anthony Cristiano. Since that time the students have been working with local mentors Rick Gibbs, Mark Sandiford, and Dave Ward in developing their projects on the theoretical, creative, technical, and entrepreneurial aspects of filmmaking. The five projects range in genre from documentary to animation to dramatic short, and will be shot over the Winter and Spring of 2008.
Crew and talent for these films and videos are drawn from the Masterclass students themselves, the IMAC membership, and the local community. The aim is to strengthen the bonds and experience of the local filmmaking community from a grass-roots level, initiating projects that will cement ties between filmmakers of all skill levels and creative vision. Each Masterclass participant has been given a budget to produce their work, and are encouraged and guided to seek additional funding from outside sources. The final stage of the Masterclass will occur in May of 2008 when internationally acclaimed experimental filmmaker and professor of film production at Concordia University, Richard Hancox, will instruct the final session on the topics of Post Production and Editing. At the conclusion of this program the films and videos will be distributed to film festivals and broadcasters in the hopes of gaining a wider audience and setting the bar for Island-based independent filmmaking.
For more info. go to www.islandmedia.pe.ca.
